Thank you for checking out my String Doctor website. Guitar playing has been a passion of mine for a long time and over the last few years, building and repairing guitars and amplifiers has become a great interest of mine.
Growing up in a small southern town, I was lucky to have a local music store with a knowledgeable owner who would repair my guitars when needed. However, as times have changed and we depend on the internet to buy products, we spend less and less time in the stores. While this is great for convenience, the service aspect of the store has gone by the wayside.
That’s a void I hope to fill with this site.
I’ve learned a lot doing my own work and have become quite proficient at it, mostly through trial and error. Now I want to share some of that knowledge so that others can experience the satisfaction I have, hopefully without making all the mistakes I did.
A Little About My Experiences
I didn’t grow up in a home with a lot of money for excessive things, so all of my first instruments were used. While I was thrilled to get them, they usually came with a few problems, so I had to learn early on how to remedy these myself.
I only had to pay a shop a few times to realize how much I could save by learning this myself. -There was no internet, so this where the trial & error came in, with a lot of error.
So here we are twenty years later with huge music chain stores who only care about sales and only a handful of small shops left that still do quality work. -Even if you can find a shop to do this work, how long is the backlog before you get your stuff back?
The Difference Between Knowledge & Wisdom
I was once told that knowledge could be gained by study and listening to others who have experienced things, but you gain wisdom by how many times you screw it up before you get it right! I had no idea how profound those words were when my father said them 27 years ago! However, when I look around my shop at all the screwed-up projects that were never finished, boy was he right! I hope to apply some of that wisdom to pass on that knowledge to others.
The Goal of String Doctor
Hopefully I can provide a resource for instructions, needed tools and parts, and encouragement to make your playing experience a better one!
